Legislative & Policy Impact

Advocacy Beyond the Bedside

Valarie's impact has extended beyond clinical practice and healthcare administration into the legislative and policy arena. Throughout her VA career, she advocated for Veteran care, VA nurses, and the advancement of Advanced Practice Registered Nurses within the Department of Veterans Affairs.

She lent her professional voice and expertise to advocacy efforts supporting the recognition of VA Advanced Practice Nurses as essential members of the healthcare team and the movement toward allowing qualified advanced practice nurses to practice to the full extent of their education, training, certification, and professional scope.

These efforts were part of a broader transformation within the VA healthcare system designed to strengthen the advanced practice nursing workforce and improve Veterans' access to high-quality healthcare. Her advocacy also included championing the contributions of VA nurses, recognizing that supporting, developing, and empowering the nursing workforce is fundamental to delivering exceptional care to America's Veterans.

Community Impact

A Commitment to Community Service

Valarie's commitment to service extends well beyond traditional clinical practice. From 2013 through 2020, she operated a free adult primary care clinic in Hampton, Virginia, providing healthcare services to uninsured, underinsured, and underserved adults who faced barriers to obtaining needed medical care.

Through the clinic, Valarie worked to ensure that individuals who might otherwise go without essential primary care had access to compassionate and respectful healthcare services. This work reflected her longstanding belief that access to quality healthcare should not be determined solely by an individual's financial circumstances.

Private Practice
